Blackfly Presses:
Submission Guidelines

What We Do:

Blackfly publishes multi-story zines and novels, both gen and slash. As of September 2007, we intend to only publish novels, novellas or one-person anthologies - sparingly. The demands of multi-media/multi-author anthologies plus the sometimes crushing demands of Real Life lately for several members of our editing/production group have made this the only sane choice.

So far, our zines have - for the most part - original works (that is, stories that haven't appeared anywhere else). If you have a popular net-pubbed novel or series, though, we'd be delighted to consider producing an illustrated zine of your work.

Slash Pairings:

Sentinel: Yes, we're Jim/Blair sluts. Other pairings are certainly welcome to join the party, but the focus should be Jim/Blair. Sex can range from none at all (pre-slash) to kinky (exceptions noted below).

Other Fandoms: We're happy to accept any pairings in any combination.

What We Look For:

Blackfly Presses publishes all kinds of fanfiction, from novels and novellas to short-story anthologies, from gen to adult and slash. The sky's pretty much the limit. We love humour - including cartoon/graphic stories - AUs, case stories, hurt/comfort, drama, crossovers, romance, games or trivia; and if you have something we haven't included, let's see it!

Editing Procedures:

We want everyone concerned to be satisfied that the final product reflects the best efforts of both Blackfly Presses and its authors. We'll give you honest, constructive feedback and suggestions, work with you on rewrites, and pay attention to what you tell us regarding your vision of the story. The bottom line is that we are editors, and we'll work with the authors to ensure consistency, good characterization, logic, and continuity.

If we turn down a story, we'll give you the reasons why it didn't work for us.

As a publisher based in Canada, Blackfly Presses follows Canadian style. This means that stories will be edited to follow Canadian rules of grammar, punctuation and spelling.

What We Pass On:

While we choose, for reasons of both personal taste and international laws, not to enter the realms of permanent death or disability, partner betrayal, domestic discipline, underaged sex and bestiality, each story will be considered on its own merits. Actor fic will not be accepted.

Tribbers:

Contributors to Blackfly zines will receive a trib copy for:
  • Stories: three or more pages in final typeset format 8-1/2" x 11"; or six or more pages in final typeset for digest format. (Note: This averages out to just over 1000 words minimum, although we do prefer longer stories.)
There is no maximum length for stories, although anything over 25,000 words could be considered for publication as a standalone novel or novella.
  • Illustrations: two full-page if matched to a story, three full-page if not matched.
  • Photo-manipulations: equivalent to two full-page if matched to a story, three full-page if not - at best resolution.
  • Games / Trivia / Editorials: three or more pages in final typeset format.
Smaller contributions will earn discounts relative to the size of the contribution.

Once your story is accepted, Blackfly retains exclusive rights to it for one year from the publication date (i.e. it cannot be posted online or published in another zine for one year after the publication date). We also use authors' names and excerpts from the stories in marketing the zines.
